Day 2 Update | Potarinau Youth Conference

Day 2 began grounded in faith and unity with a powerful morning devotion led by the Aishalton, Baitoon, and Karaudarnau youth, setting the tone for a day of purpose. This was followed by an energizing PE session facilitated by the GDF, building not only physical strength, but discipline, teamwork, and confidence. The youth were fully engaged and enjoyed every moment.
The day officially opened in culture and pride with a vibrant dance around the benab, led by the Potarinau Culture Group. Followed by the blessings of the place done by an elder. Updates on the work of the SRDC were shared by Project Coordinator, Mr. Kid James, along with a meaningful overview of the APA done by their Communication and Visibility Officer, Lakhram Trevor Bhagirat and crew, who they are and the work they continue to do. We truly appreciate their presence and support throughout the conference.
A powerful session on national security followed, facilitated by the GDF, represented by Srgt Joseph and Lance Corporal Akeem Gilean . The youth listened attentively as they learned about the duties and responsibilities of the Force, expectations of service, the process of joining the army, and even the food packages used by soldiers on patrol – sparking curiosity and meaningful dialogue.
Sustainable Development was then brought to life by Michael Thomas of Aishalton Village, a respected voice in the South Rupununi. He spoke passionately about sustaining ourselves as Indigenous peoples, addressing challenges we face and encouraging the wise, responsible use of our resources. Together, the youth created a mini action plan focused on sustainable development within their own communities.
The final presentation was delivered by Ron Albert, representing The Nine Nations. Ron journeyed from Georgetown to share his knowledge on Networking and Collaboration. Beginning with an interactive game, he highlighted the value of building genuine relationships, locally and internationally, and how collaboration empowers both individuals and communities.
The afternoon was filled with joy and bonding at the creek: water volleyball, futsal, swimming, cards, dominoes, snake and ladder, chair dancing, basket weaving, cotton spinning and more. The day ended on a high note with a cookout prepared by the young men, followed by a cultural show, dancing and socializing, as youth campaigned and advocated for their new Youth Chair and Vice Chairperson ahead of today’s election. Throughout the day, youth were reminded to uphold discipline – no alcohol or other substances allowed.
A truly full, inspiring and fun-filled day, proof that when youth come together with purpose, culture and discipline, the future is bright.
“When young people are rooted in culture, guided by values and united in purpose, they don’t just prepare for the future – they shape it.”
