What an inspiring first day for our “Empowering Youth Through Culture, Leadership, and Growth” conference, which is being held in Potarinau Village. The day started with a morning devotion at 5:00 am led by the youth and a PE session, preparing the youth for the day ahead.
Later, as youth gathered, the energy was high as we started with a march past, followed by an opening ceremony in the open field, under the blazing sun, as youth and guests showcased a few of their talents, soldiers doing a drill demonstration, setting the tone for a day of learning and connection.
The event was officially opened with a warm welcome from the host, Toshao Brian Ambrose, who encouraged all the youth to grasp every opportunity and learn as much as possible during this conference.
Ms. Tonica Anthon, our Communications Officer gave an overview of the Conference; and emphasized that Indigenous youth are important to shaping our community’s future and present. She gave a brief background of what the three- days will focus on, key topics such as leadership, collaboration, sustainable development that protects culture, and the immediate realities of climate change. She encouraged youths to actively participate by asking questions and sharing their stories, stating the overall goal of the conference: For youth to build strong connections with peers and facilitators to strengthen their collective voice.
Today’s sessions were packed with valuable knowledge on:
Leadership Roles and Responsibilities: Facilitated by Toshao Michael Wilson and Ms. Tonica Anthon, who reminded the youths that true leadership is about responsibility, service, and integrity, and not title.
Technology & Innovation: Youth enjoyed a thrilling drone flying demonstration and an introduction to Geographic Information Systems (GIS Basics), expertly facilitated by Melvin Henry and Ezra Jeffrey.
Career Development: Engaging sessions focused on opportunities in Education, Health, and presentations from the Guyana Defense Force.
To end the day, youth are involved in friendly matches of football and cricket. And evening of karaoke and socializing.
A special thank you to

The journey has just begun.
We can’t wait to see what the rest of the two days holds. Stay tuned for more updates.
